If you are using an Android smartphone, there is a high chance that you can retrieve deleted text messages before they have vanished once and for all. Here, I have explained easy ways to recover deleted text messages on Android.

1. Recover deleted texts on Android phone

If you are using a Samsung smartphone, you are in luck, as a recycle bin exists for deleted text messages.

So, when you delete a message from your Samsung smartphone, they are not wiped away directly. Instead, deleted messages are stored in the recycle bin for a period of 30 days. Here are the steps to recover those deleted text messages:

  1. Open the Messages app → Tap the three-dot icon at the top right → Choose Recycle Bin.
Here, you can view deleted text messages.

Open messages and Tap three dots and select recycle bin
  2. Tap the deleted text message that you want to recover → Select Restore.
  3. Now, the message will start appearing in your Inbox, amongst other messages.

Tap the message and select restore and see that message in inbox

2. Find Deleted Text Messages from Google Drive backup

This is by far the easiest method. If you accidentally deleted a message and want to recover it, you can restore it easily if you have enabled Google Drive backup.

When you back up your data on Google Drive, Google automatically backups all text messages as well. However, to restore text messages on Android, you will have to factory reset your device and restore it from the backup.

If the lost message is quite precious to you and you are willing to factory reset your device, here are the steps for it.

  1. First, you will need to factory reset the device. Go to SettingsSystemReset.
  2. Choose Erase All Data (Factory Reset) → Confirm your decision by tapping Erase All Data again.
Your Android phone will reboot and will restart with the setup screen.
  3. After the initial setup process, choose the Backup from Cloud option whenever it appears.
It will appear after the Copy apps & data option on the screen.
  4. Sign in to your Google account → Tap Agree, and you will see all available previous backups.
  5. Choose the backup that you created before deleting the text message.
  6. Tap Restore.

The process will take some time. You will be able to view the deleted messages on Android once the restore process is complete.

3. Contact carrier to recover deleted messages on Android

Many of you might not be aware that some carriers like AT&T and Verizon offer their own message backup and restore apps to help you retrieve deleted messages on Android.

If you are using the AT&T carrier, you can use AT&T Messages Backup and Sync, whereas Verizon users can recover deleted messages using the Verizon Messages app.

If the methods mentioned above have not bore fruit and you are still wondering how to retrieve deleted text messages, it is better to contact your carrier for some professional help.

4. Use third-party message recovery apps on Android

If none of the above methods have helped you in your journey to find deleted text messages, you can always use third-party message recovery apps. Most of these apps are paid apps, but they usually get the job done.

If you desperately want to recover permanently deleted messages on Android, you can use these apps. We recommend Dr. Fone Data Recovery and Ultdata for Android from Tenorshare. In my personal experience, these apps have helped me get back deleted messages.

Retrieve text messages on Android from Archived Messages

This is not a direct method to recover a deleted message on Android. But if you are using Google Messages, there is a possibility that you may have accidentally archived the message instead of deleting it.

If this is the case, you will not be able to find it in your Inbox, and can recover it from the Archived messages.

  1. Open the Google Messages app → Tap the profile icon at the top right.
  2. Select Archived to view all the archived messages.
  3. To recover a message, long press on it → Select the Unarchive icon indicated by an upward-facing arrow.

Tap on your profile and select Archived, tap the message and select unarchived
  4. The message can now be seen in your Inbox.
